The 5th of November:

Started & Completed a household project this weekend. Cleaned, reorganized, chopped my old desk up into pieces and threw the old wood and rusty nails belonging to said desk out; in replace of new *actual* desk. I was using this self-made wooden desk before, and am now using something very official looking, clean with a nice finish for my computer, stereo, camera equipment, and books to rest atop. Quite pleased. I found so many old books, I thought I’d lost. I now have a working printer again, so no more emailing my articles and essays for school over to my folks computer to print out anymore.

Mmm, let’s see a little something different now; in the process of moving & reorganizing I found some really old photo album with all these negatives and print sheets of old photoshoots. Not to be confused with old as in a few years or months ago, but I mean from my first ever shoots. I found photos that were developed in my school photo lab, and I guess when I got my digital cameras I simply forgot about them. I have not seen these film sheets since the time they were captured. This was before I got on the computer for anything other than playing Lemmings, before I even knew what Myspace or Livejournal was, or even really used a chat program. Very Hilary Computer-Newb Era.

Well, I still haven’t hooked up my scanner so I had to take pictures of these print sheets with my digital camera and upload them all that way. As you can see these photo sheets have aged significantly, and the quality is very bad. The "film grain" effect isn’t Photoshop, that is just the process of time. They have been tossed around a lot over the years and left to deteriorate in some dusty photo album. In fact I remember why I put them all there, I was hiding them from my mom, because they were risqué for my age, and I didn’t want to get into trouble ! Haha. In one of the shoots you can see I’m wearing a ‘Marduk’ shirt before I cut it up and made it a stummy-shirt later on. . . anyway, I still have the shirt. I had really fried hair. I was always experimenting with it and bleaching it and doing all sorts of shit to my head. I was but a wee thing. Well, I am still that awkward geek. Mmm yes, one shoot is in the cemetery, as if the concept was the living end! At least I now, know better of that idea.

I warn, the quality is very bad, and I was very young. The combination, isn't exactly all that extraordinary. I didn't feel like loading all of them, but at least a few samples. In person, up close they are a little more clear, however through the process of uploading film print sheets to internet, and photobucket, when it's already aged & damaged, well you get the point...

Of course I had to nail like, every extreme Black Metal theme; frolicking in the forest, steel toe boots, obsession with the morbid & the dead... as well nature exploration, ah youth! Wait a minute, that's still me now >.< Oh bother, some things never change.

I like the pics you took, very artistic, well as you are yourself, as far as i got to know you ;)

SO, when are you visiting? I need some sexy time with my wife!

I can't imagine someone so cunning & devious as you to be an angel ;-) I'll love to see those.

Thank you, I miss those days, but I'm not really nostalgic about my past, just the sense of feeling a lot more free, less restricted.

If I had the funds, I'd have visited a million places ages ago! I still have my plans, whatever I did not complete previously, I am still able to work toward, so I suffer no loss knowing when the time is right to travel out of the states, it'll happen. It makes it more rewarding, when it takes more time & effort. I'll let you know when I have it all together, myself & my money =)

I've almost the same photographs from the cemetery when I was...hmmm 18 or 19 years old I think, but yours are breathtaking!
I love the antiquity effect that these pictures are full of. The third one is my favourite!

Thank you! My boyfriend hadn't seen these before, and said the 3rd was also his favorite; how he most remembers me from when we first started dating, awe. I can always enjoy some nostalgic cemetery recapping. I still enjoy photographs of cemeteries in general, the architecture is still as beautiful as ever to me.

these are lovely. the effects of time and age on these, and the photo-of-a-photo effect are really interesting and add a lot of depth to their mood. i wish i had more photos of myself from long ago. i never allowed anyone to take my photo and now that part of me is lost because of insecurity.

I wasn't sure how taking a picture of the pictures would develop but I think it adds a little something. Thank you.

You know it's rather funny, of all the photos I've ever had taken of myself, the ones where I was most insecure and most unsure of myself, I like the most. I didn't put so much emphasis on "trying" it was just natural - even if at the time I couldn't identify with how lovely that really is. I'm still insecure so I understand what you mean, it never really does vanish, but I think if you have a reliable memory, then hey, that works too!

These are absolutely BEAUTIFUL.
There's really no need to warn about bad quality, because I think they're stunning the way they are. But then again I took photography classes for 4 years. During which we experimented a lot with destroying film, messing up negatives, and finding developing methods which would add cool effects to our final images.

You have suddenly made me pine for the fun of torching negatives with a lighter and attempting to fit the charred remains into a negative holder, and even more comically into an enlarger.

I agree, I adore the raggedy look they have.
But then again, I've always been fascinated with destroying beautiful things to make them even more stunning.

And PS., I didn't know you read Hilary's journal too, Cassi!
But it doesn't surprise me :p

I absolutely love the worn out & aged look they have. I love how there are elements in the photos that are faded. If you ever decide to upload the rest I would love to see them.

XoXo.

Hey Soph,

If your truly interested, I'll *try* to get them scanned and maybe you can use some of them for your stock? Glad you enjoyed them, the damaged effect is the only reason I like them so much ^.^ Wish time could damage all the photos I take like this, only in a much more accelerated manner, Hehe.

What a lucky find. And I know the feeling. Last year, I came upon an old sketchbook of mine from my early teens (young Erich once fancied himself an artist of sorts). The sensation of rediscovering a faded past is both humbling and strangely reassuring. Regardless of their initial impression of youthful relevance, I must admit that some of these are quite striking - very lovely in conceptualization and expression. It seems you've always been a talented woman, Hilary. :)

Shit Hilary! Those negatives and print sheets are beautiful! I mean the photos themselves are original and very artistic also you’ve presented them to us in a very intellectual way, you ooze art baby!

You know those times when you see something so breathtaking that you rummage around your brain for those words inside your head that don’t exist and will never be able to describe what you’ve felt at the moment? That’s how it felt when I saw that first picture on this set. I’m not sure if it was the light background consisting of the pale sky and the saint, the dark clothes, the pose, the hair, the garter belt, or just a combination of these things with the negative print feeling. Interesting!

Hello there. Always a pleasure to hear from you. You are very generous with your words, thank you for stopping by to have a look!

I am thoroughly inspired to do more projects like this, maybe with a little more clarity and some different themes, but the aging effects are really quite satisfying. Pleased to read such encouraging thoughts - Thanks once again!

This guy walked up behind me, "Did you take those?!", unfortunately, no, I said. He commented he liked the expression. I quite like the aged look, the process of time only adds to the images in my opinion, though of course some quality and details get lost on the way to the screen. Glad you posted them, anyhow. =)

There are a few really, REALLY beautiful images here - almost accidentally coaxed out of the material because of the archival quality of what's been left. Twelveth one down where you allow yourself a smile by accident - because all of this photography stuff is so DESPERATELY serious when you're that age, you were MAKING *ART* after all, right? :P - that twelveth one is almost heartbreakingly pretty, kiddo.

The found quality of the lot makes them even more special, I think. Makes the whole thing act a lot like memory does, doesn't it? Little tiny snatchets of stuff, sometimes not what we were expecting to remember at all. Sometimes the best stuff cut in half or stained with something else - still special, still scary, still pretty, nevertheless.

I truly adore these photographs oh-so-much. I apologize for the random disappearance act -- which wasn`t so much an act as it was a way of the world telling me I can`t even befriend anyone on LJ {or elsewhere} without being harassed 24/7. I`m so sorry. Unfortunately, for right now, there`s so much drama in my life that`s attempting to suffocate me, so I`m using MySpace as a way to share my photography portfolio, and have withered away on every other website since then. Either way, I`m still terribly sorry to vanish like that. It`s really quite sad because I enjoy conversing with different types of people on here, but alas, I don`t think it`s my time for this. Shame on the ignorant, bless the gifted. Nevertheless, your work is amazing -- whether from the current realm or another, and I`ve always enjoyed looking at your photographs. Hope all is well -- take care. :)
